Bedol Water Powered Clock review and comments

by Lauren on February 11, 2009

One of the coolest gadgets I’ve come across is the Bedol Water Powered Clock. It’s such a sleek design, and it’s a serious eco-product. It’s powered by a dash of water and a pinch of salt and it keeps perfect time with no batteries. Yeah, NO batteries!

The scientific principle at work is that electrodes harvest energy from the water. Also, adding a squeeze of lemon will enhance the power generated by the clock and make it work more efficiently.

The clock is a bit smaller than I expected, and I’m bummed that it’s not an alarm clock (maybe they’ll come out with one soon?! *hint* *hint*), but I love the idea that this thing needs not batteries. Now, if we can just get them to make kids toys like this, maybe it would not be necessary for parents to go broke keeping their kid’s in batteries. But I digress..

So, the instructions are not the greatest, it shows several spoonfuls of salt (yikes!) but you only need a pinch, and personally, I think it runs better on more lemon, and less salt.

So, positives:

  • runs on water - no batteries
  • lasts up to 3-4 weeks (or longer) on one “tank” , so refilling is not constant

Negatives:

  • it’s not an alarm clock.
  • not sure how portable it is…you’d probably have to empty it if taking it on a trip.

Let me know what YOU think!

Really cool clock, that it is water driven I mean. Maybe they can use some hydrogen power soon….

This clock is amazing!! I’ve had mine since april (its now late july) and still haven’t needed to change the water even though it says every 6 to 8 weeks. It is the perfect clock to keep in the bathroom!

Oh, and I saw on their website they now have ones with alarms!
