Is Global Warming Real?

by Lauren on February 26, 2009

So, is global warming real? Or is it just some fake global condition dreamed up by a vast left-wing conspiracy?

My answer to that questions is “I don’t know”. And furthermore, I don’t care whether it’s real or provable. (Yes, you are reading this on a green living blog!)

So, why do I say this? It probably stems from a conversation I had with a friend the other day. She asked me, “What if global warming is not really happening? Won’t you feel silly that you were making all these lifestyle changes?”

So, after I mentally picked myself up off the floor, I realized I needed to think about my answer. The truth is that I don’t know if global warming is real or not. Yes, I’ve read the reports about the polar ice caps melting and all the other evidence, but I also know that there are scientists on both sides of this debate who have degrees in this subject, that I don’t, who don’t agree. On the other side of the debate, there are those that are saying that the “global warming movement” is now renaming themselves “climate change” because the earth is showing that it’s going into a cooling trend.

Well, for me it’s easy. My green living lifestyle has nothing to do with whether or not global warming is real or not. It doesn’t take a degree in anything to understand that landfills are overflowing, streams are becoming toxic, the ocean is both simultaneously our toilet and our refrigerator (wrap your head around that), and the air is polluted from carbon emissions.

So I’m comfortable with the debate raging on, because I’d make these changes regardless. That was my answer to my friend, and she respected that. What about you? Would you make changes to live in a more earth friendly manner, even if global warming was disproved?
