The Eco-Dating Game

by Lauren on January 26, 2009

Dating is hard enough.  But if you find yourself with a date who drives an energy-monster SUV, throws their gum wrapper on the street, or thinks “going green” means walking from the golf fairway to the golf green, maybe it’s time to become a green single and seek out dates, like you, who care about the planet.

The Online Dating World of Green

Believe it or not, beyond the most popular online dating services, there are many that are dedicated to eco-friendly singles looking for some green love so to speak.  One such site is Green Passions which offers paring up like-minded green single matches, blogs, chats, and forums—all free.

Really, green dating has been around for years, but because so many of the standard dating sites are considered acceptable dating etiquette, so too are the green dating sites.  Another site, Green Singles whose slogan is “where hearts and minds connect,” has been connecting eco-friendly people since 1985—and only recently on the web.  It’s all free to search member profiles and start your own.  Do some research and type in “green dating” on your search engine—it’s amazing how many website are out there!

These sites are not just about green dating either—they are about green singles first who want to meet people like them for dating yes, but also for networking on green topics like earth stewardship, alternative medicines, organic food, and vegan living. In a hurry? Try Green Speed Dating!

Offline “Green” Dating Ideas

While the online route is great for green singles who want to meet, what are the off-line options?  Well, if you have the date, consider making the date green.  Do this by offering to cook at home instead of wasting gasoline to go out.  Skip the rented movie, turn off the lights, and illuminate the room with candles and the glow from your fireplace while talking about green topics that interest both of you.

Try taking your green date outdoors and bike together, hike together, and picnic with a basket of organic yummies.  If you have water near, rent a canoe or hand-rowed boat or go white water rafting.  A green date can even be a night at a green event like attending a green speaker event at your local auditorium.

If you do venture out into the commercial world of restaurants and film, try to find organic restaurants with vegan choices, gluten-free choices, and other items to tempt your taste buds.  Seek out ones that buy local wine or brew their own beer.  Find out if the green restaurant you choose buys foods from local growers.  See a film that offers a green message—try a good documentary!

Involve your friends in your green dating quest.  After all, if they are your friends, more than not, they are a lot like you as far as their environmental beliefs.  Maybe one of them has a brother, uncle, or young grandfather!

If you’re the date picker-upper, try renting a bike built for two (yep they are still around), or pick them up in your Hybrid vehicle if you really want to impress.  Or, turn a regular date into a green date!  Do this by discussing environmental issues such as endangered species, landfills, chemical waste, or energy alternatives.  Even if your date isn’t truly green, almost everyone cares inside about these issues and you can pretty much bet you’ll find one they want to talk about.

After you’ve had the best time of your life on that first green date, buy a nice card that is made from recycled paper and send along a note about how much fun you had and would they be interested in meeting again?

Going green can be applied to almost every aspect of our lives—even dating, so you don’t have to suffer through people who blow smoke in your face, ones who play video games using their power-hungry 52” television set, or have no clue that plastics have ratings!  Give green dating a try if you consider yourself a green single.  Whether you go it alone or try some online dating sites to find a match, you’ll have more fun with someone who cares about Mother Earth as much as you do.
